Rounding is difficult because children must think about a number’s size while temporarily ignoring some of its digits. Many memorize “five or more, raise the score” without knowing which place changes, or they round every digit in succession. The real model is distance on a number line, including the exact halfway case. It usually settles in during grades 3 and 4, once place value is secure enough for a child to see 347 as a point between 300 and 400.

A good rounding game makes both benchmarks visible and asks for an estimate before revealing the answer. The child should place or move a number, compare its distance from each endpoint, and encounter halfway values deliberately. Better games also vary the rounding place and include numbers near, not only far from, a boundary. Speed-only quizzes can build fluency later, but they miss the misconception underneath: a child may apply a rhyme correctly while having no idea why 150 and 149 behave differently.

Ask, “What are the two numbers this one sits between?” and “Which is closer?” before discussing the rounding digit. For a kitchen-table extension, estimate a grocery total by rounding each price to the nearest dollar, then compare the estimate with the receipt. Let your child decide whether rounding every item up or down created a useful estimate, and try a mixed strategy on the next total.
